Surround Sound Systems

LCD televisions are wonderful but one thing that lets them down is the sound. They produce stereo sound and sometimes have virtual surround sound but these come nowhere near the quality of a Dolby Digital surround sound system. The quality of the sound is much better as it is produced from 5 speakers and has bass from the subwoofer which adds a huge amount of power to the sound, this is nothing though compared to the sense of reality you get when you hear things happening behind you and sounds darting around the room.

Imagine for example a helicopter flying into a scene in a film; on standard stereo speakers you will have no reference as to where it is coming from but with surround sound you can hear the exact location that it is flying from and so if it comes from behind the camera and into the shot you will hear it come in flying over your head!

The best surround sound systems utilise Dolby Digital and this is what is used in most cinemas, it has a very high quality of sound and also uses five speakers and a subwoofer and so you get a very realistic surround sound experience. When you buy a Dolby Digital system be sure to set the speakers up so that they are in the far corners of the room, as far away from each other as possible as this gives the best surround sound (if you have them too close together the sounds will simply merge and it will be hard to differentiate between them).
